LONDON (AP) — Jarrod Bowen was rewarded for his breakthrough season at West Ham by earning his first call-up to the England squad ahead of four Nations League games next month.

Bowen, who has scored 12 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League, was joined in England’s 27-man squad by Leicester full-back James Justin.

Manchester United’s collapse as a Premier League force was symbolized by the side having only one representative in the squad – Harry Maguire – with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Luke Shaw all overlooked.

From June 4-11, England will face Hungary twice as well as Italy and Germany in their Nations League group. Group play ends in September.

It marked the penultimate announcement of the squad by England coach Gareth Southgate before he announced that his squad will take part in the World Cup in Qatar in November and December.

Bowen is making a late run for the World Cup after playing for West Ham on the right wing this season, with his total number of goal contributions – 22 – beaten only by four Premier League players: Mohamed Salah, Son Heung- min, Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne.

With no specialist left-back called up by Southgate, Justin has gotten the call for his versatility – he can play both left and right – and will likely compete with Kieran Trippier for a starting spot.

Justin returned to competition in January after a year out with a right anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Centre-back Fikayo Tomori is back in the squad after helping AC Milan win the Italian league in his first full season in Serie A.

Tammy Abraham, who also plays in Italy with Roma, has been chosen to replace captain Harry Kane as a centre-forward ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has missed most of the season with Everton through injury.

Sancho and Rashford paid the price for a poor season for United, who finished sixth with 58 points – their lowest tally since the Premier League was founded in 1992. Maguire retained his place in the squad, as as one of five centre-backs, despite his fall. by United for some games towards the end of the campaign.

Sancho missed the last games of the season due to illness.

England play Hungary on June 4, Germany on June 7, Italy at home on June 11 and Hungary at home on June 14.

The England-Italy game is a repeat of last year’s European Championship final, but will be played in an empty stadium as punishment for the crowd disturbances that marred the title match at the stadium. Wembley in July.

Brahim Diaz has now written his name in the football history books with a milestone that demonstrates his remarkable ability.

The 22-year-old playmaker, on loan to AC Milan from real Madridfriends A-series on his record and became the youngest player in history, as well as the first Spaniard, to lift all three top league trophies: the Premier League, LaLiga Santander and now the Scudetto.

Only two players had achieved this triple crown, namely Cristiano Ronaldo and Danilo.

Ronaldo, like Brahim, began his triumphant journey in England, although he did so at Manchester United. Then, like the Malaga player, he continued in Spain, at Real Madrid. And finally, he won the Scudetto with Juventus. Danilo’s route, on the other hand, was Real Madrid-Manchester City-Juventus.

Brahim started the 2017/18 season in the Premier League. His participation may be considered symbolic, with 49 minutes over five games, but it was enough for him to celebrate what is called the toughest league in the world. In 2020, he contributed to real Madridappearing in six games, accumulating 130 minutes, during which he scored one goal and provided one assist.

In his second season playing for a Milano team that were underdogs for the title, he finished eleventh within minutes, with four goals and four assists. So, at 22 years, nine months and 19 days, he sealed his triple crown.

Brahim’s uncertain future

A period of reflection is now open for Brahim, yet. Its ready to Milano only has one season left, but it could be discontinued this summer.

real Madrid are tempted by the idea, although Brahim always said he was happy to Milanoand the Rossoneri are happy with the way things are going. that’s why Paolo Maldini will take the opportunity to try to keep it permanently.

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Josh Rojas hit three homers in a 9-5 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon (box score). In doing so, Rojas became the fourth player this year to score the hat trick.

Rojas, who entered the afternoon after hitting .250/.367/.250 (84 OPS+) in his first 13 games this season, has delivered solo shots in the first and seventh. He added a two-run homer in the fifth inning. He also wasn’t the only member of the Diamondbacks roster to hit multiple home runs, with outfielder David Peralta uncorking a pair himself.

Friday marked Rojas’ third career multi-home game. He played two home games last June, a week apart: first on June 5 against the Milwaukee Brewers, then on June 12 against the Los Angeles Angels. CBS Sports named Rojas as the Diamondbacks breakout player before the season.

As mentioned in the intro, Rojas is the fourth player this season to complete a three-home run game. He’s second in the past 24 hours, with Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story himself throwing three home runs against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Previously, Anthony Rizzo and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had each accomplished the feat in April.

The Diamondbacks entered Friday with 12 games in their existence in which a batter hit three or more homers. The most recent event came in the 2018 season, when AJ Pollock did it against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The franchise record for most home runs in a single game still belongs to JD Martinez, who homered four in a blowout win over the Dodgers in September 2017.

The criteria for the Premier League Young Player of the Year (YPOTY) award is very lenient and a bit odd.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Declan Rice, Aaron Ramsdale, Bukayo Saka, Conor Gallagher and Tyrick Mitchell have been nominated for this season’s accolade, which is decided by a combination of public and panel votes. of experts.

Every player on the eight-man shortlist has enjoyed a successful Premier League campaign, but the inclusion of some names has again sparked debate over whether eligibility rules allow for an accurate representation of rising stars in the division.

As it stands, “any player aged 23 or younger at the start of the season” can win the award. Marcus Rashford has continued to be a contender this season, despite this being his seventh league campaign as a senior player. Foden, born May 28, 2000, will be eligible through the 2024-25 season.

Foden was the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season for 2020-21 (Picture: Michael Regan/Getty Images)

The reason for the lenient age limit could be that everyone is maturing at different rates and we should be giving football’s latest a chance to win an individual prize early in their career.

But the Professional Footballers’ Association’s (PFA) recent rule change regarding the Young Player of the Year award lends a little less credence to that view. Since 2021, players must be 21 or younger by July 1 to be eligible for the campaign that follows. Under those rules, only one member of the Premier League shortlist – Arsenal’s Saka – will be able to win this season’s PFA award, which is decided by a vote among professional players.

Developing criteria for the Young Footballer of the Year awards is a difficult task. You’re trying to apply an objective framework to classify individuals in a team sport that allows for a lot of subjective interpretation. But Athleticism would like to try.

The ultimate goal – to celebrate the upcoming young players and the future of the Premier League – will remain the same. How we get there will be a little different.

Here is a proposal for the Premier League Rookie of the Year award. Also tell us who you will vote for in the end…

Replace age limit with time qualifier

As our understanding of when a footballer reaches his maximum age changes, our idea of what makes someone a ‘young’ player should also change.

For example, here is the number of seasons of current YPOTY candidates in which they have made more than four Premier League appearances.

A young player award should focus on the point where a player ceases to be a relative unknown in the Premier League and begins to become a cohesive entity. To do this, we first looked at all the players who received their first first-team minutes in the 2021-22 season. This created a shortlist of 127 players, which we have started to narrow down to a shortlist.

Then we created a qualifier for minutes played, to separate young academy graduates making a late appearance as a substitute at the end of the season from someone who has made a number of contributions to their team. A Premier League player can play up to 3,420 minutes each season (excluding stoppage time). There are 22 players who have played for at least half of that – 1,710 minutes.

However, to give a more accurate representation of a league that has undergone squad reshuffles in the January transfer window, has seen a number of game postponements due to COVID-19 and often sees younger players or less experienced substituted during matches, we have lowered our qualifying minutes played to 1,500. This gives us 31 players for 2021-22, while Burnley’s Nathan Collins (1,489 mins), Crystal Palace’s Odsonne Edouard (1,488) and Watford’s Imran Louza (1,419) could still squeeze in before the campaign ends on Sunday.

What about the age limit?

The oldest debutant in the 2021-22 season is Watford’s Juraj Kucka, who is 35 and has played 1,923 minutes. The youngest is Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, who turned 17 this season and played 22 minutes.

In our shortlist of 31 players who played over 1,500 minutes in their debut Premier League campaign, 12 of them were 23 or younger before the start of the season.

Decide on the 2021-22 Rookie of the Year

Dear readers, here are your candidates for Athleticism The 2021-22 Rookie of the Year award, which recognizes players aged 23 or younger in their first Premier League season logging at least 1,500 minutes.

The names presented are in descending order of minutes played. An asterisk indicates that a player qualifies for local Premier League status (any player, regardless of age or nationality, who was registered with a club in England or Wales for three seasons before his 21st birthday ).

Premier League minutes played: 3,133

The former Chelsea academy graduate has now become the bedrock of Patrick Vieira’s culture reset at Crystal Palace. Guehi’s progressive runs from deep have been key to Palace’s game and this season has also seen the 21-year-old become a senior England international.

Marc Cucurella

Club: Brighton and Hove Albion

Position: Leaving behind

Premier League minutes played: 3,002

Winner of Brighton’s Player of the Season award, Cucurella has always been excellent for Graham Potter’s side. A former Barcelona B player as well as a silver medalist with Spain at the Tokyo Olympics last year, the 23-year-old has played at left-back, left-back and left-centre back in a defensive line for Brighton. Club fans have taken it to heart, but Cucurella is more than just a haircut.

Bryan Mbeumo

Brentford

Club: Brentford

Position: Right winger

Premier League minutes played: 2,825

A ‘flamboyant talent’ within Thomas Frank’s side, Mbeumo’s debut season saw him serve as a foil to striker Ivan Toney. A player of great offensive variety and unpredictable.

Premier League minutes played: 2,217

The German Under-21 player is Brentford’s pressing machine, according to Athleticism Jay Harris.

“When you’re not playing him, you find out what you’re missing. You can more or less trust him instantly. He always plays at a certain level,” was Frank’s diagnosis of his defensive shield in midfield.

Premier League minutes played: 2,216

One of two Tottenham players on this list, right-back/right-back Emerson Royal has impressed since the arrival of Antonio Conte. The Brazilian’s mobility and one-on-one aggression have been a key part of one of the nastiest defenses in the league.

Another Chelsea academy graduate, Livramento was the Premier League’s third-most-fouled player in November 2021, such was the frequency and chaos his forward runs caused. An anterior cruciate ligament injury has cruelly interrupted an impressive season for the young full-back who has been one of the best transfers of the season.

Premier League minutes played: 1,952

“The future of Leicester” according to club correspondent Rob Tanner, Dewsbury-Hall has been with the club since he was eight years old, progressing through his Under-18 and Under-23 teams. Brendan Rodgers looked to the young, left-footed, box-to-box midfielder to provide energy and industry to his changing central midfield.

Kristoffer Ajer

Brentford

Club: Brentford

Position: Central defender

Premier League minutes played: 1,911

Aged 23 at the start of the season, Ajer is the relatively old man on this shortlist. He is a strong and sensible defender who is also not afraid to carry the ball out of defense and launch his team’s attacks.

Jadon Sancho*

Club: Manchester United

Position: Winger

Premier League minutes played: 1,902

Much was expected of Sancho this season, but the 22-year-old could only offer a glimpse of the skills that regularly dismantled Bundesliga defences. A goal in the Manchester derby was proof that his talents were still there, but he might need a more consistent full-back behind him to improve his output next season.

Christian Romero

Club: Tottenham Hotspur

Position: Central defender

Premier League minutes played: 1,846

“I’ve always had this spirit, this desire and this aggressiveness. And I think if I ever lost that, I would have a problem,” Romero said in an interview with Athleticism in April. The Argentine has brought physicality and focus to Spurs’ backline since arriving on loan from Atalanta last summer. The future permanent fee of £42.5m already looks like a bargain.

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Arsenal

(Photo: Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC via Getty Images)

Club: Arsenal

Position: Back right

Premier League minutes played: 1,682

Tomiyasu is a full-back of the old-school orthodox variety, prioritizing his defensive duties over attacking effort and overlapping his winger in front. This selflessness allows Mikel Arteta to play with an ambitious asymmetrical system, directing Arsenal’s attacks to the left safely, knowing that Tomiyasu can cover the right.

Joshua Sargent

City of Norwich

Club: City of Norwich

Position: Before

Premier League minutes played: 1,578

Nicknamed “Napolean Dynamite” by his teammates, US men’s national team striker Sargent took an unconventional route to the Premier League. In what has been a difficult season for Norwich, Sargent has remained a hardworking and committed striker.

The day after a performance of five points and four rebounds in an elimination game where he argued with the coach of the year is probably not the right time to ask this question, but there it is. :

Is Deandre Ayton a max player?

The Suns didn’t put a maximum extension on the table for him before the season (leading to tension between the teams), with the result being that he’s on the verge of heading into restricted free agency. Would the Suns offer him a max now? When a reporter posed a softball question to Devin Booker after Game 7 about Ayton’s free agency – the kind of question that was usually answered with some version of “he’s an essential part of our culture and what we’re doing” – Booker wasn’t so enthusiastic.

After this playoff performance, will the Suns put a maximum offer on the table for Ayton?

If they don’t, another team will, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski told NBA Today.

Wojnarowski added that “at the start of the season, Deandre Ayton didn’t feel valued by this Phoenix organization.”

The Suns have the right to match any offer Ayton receives.

Ayton averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game this season, but he wasn’t a defensive stopper (the Suns’ defense was 2.3 points per 100 possessions worse with him on the floor). In the playoffs, there were games where he looked like a max player, and games where he fell into the background (like Game 7 against Dallas).

The list of teams looking for a center is quite established – Toronto, Charlotte, Atlanta and possibly the Detroit Pistons. (If the Hornets are going to hire Mike D’Antoni as coach, maximizing a traditional center may not be the smart play.) ESPN’s Zach Lowe, on his podcast, speculated on the Thunder, Knicks and other teams that kicked the tires on an Ayton contract. The challenge for any of these teams outside of Detroit is that they don’t have the cap space to sign him outright, any deal would be a sign and trade – is a team gonna maximizing Ayton and giving up picks/players to secure his rights? For a guy who admitted during the playoffs that he was losing sleep staying up late playing video games? That’s a huge bet on the former No. 1 pick.

After watching a team of five Mavericks push them out of the playoffs, the Suns could rethink their roster build and consider leaving Ayton. However, they’re not just going to give it away for pennies on the dollar.

It’s going to be a very interesting summer in Phoenix.

“I have fond memories of the time we spent together in Mumbai Indians. May his soul rest in peace, condolences to his family and friends.”

He tweeted: “We exchanged messages a few hours ago… what is really going on? Confused and sorry! How could we lose another iconic figure in our sport so soon RIP Roy Condolences to Andrew’s family and close friends.

Virender Sehwag, the former Indian batsman, called Symonds “one of the finest entertainers” and added “his passing is a great loss to world cricket”.

Kent was “shocked and saddened” by the death of their “former foreign star and cult hero” while Surrey said Symonds had “left a mark on the club on and off the pitch”.

Lancashire tweeted: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Andrew Symonds, who played for @lancscricket in 2005. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace Symo.

Gloucestershire also paid tribute, tweeting: ‘Everyone in Gloucestershire is devastated to hear of the tragic death of Andrew Symonds. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him at this sad time.

Lamin ‘Junior Tumbu’ Conteh of Sierra Leone has played club football in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia

Mohamed Kallon says his former Sierra Leone team-mate Lamin Conteh is the best player he has ever played with or against – better even than World Cup winner Ronaldo.

It’s a bold statement from Kallon, whose time at Italian side Inter Milan coincided with the legendary Brazilian striker, three-time Fifa Player of the Year.

Conteh, a former captain of the Leone Stars also known as Junior Tumbu, died in hospital in eastern Sierra Leone on Thursday following an unspecified short illness at the age of just 45.

The striker’s international career saw him play at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and 1996, while at club level he played in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

“Junior is the best player I’ve seen in terms of ability; how to deal with the ball, his dribbling skills, his magic touch, his intelligence and his understanding of the game. Put it all together, he’s the best,” said Kallon told BBC Sport Africa.

“Yes, I played with a lot of big names and against big names – but Conteh was unique.

“I saw how he made things easy and simple in difficult times. He made difficult things very simple, which is why I admired him so much.

“He was a genius. Sierra Leone has lost a gem. He will be missed.”

Conteh “needs to be honoured”

Conteh was considered one of the finest players Sierra Leone had ever produced, and was also considered by many to be the best of his generation.

His Sierra Leonean teammates and fans admired his touch, excellent dribbling and ability to tackle defenders.

Kallon says Conteh deserves to be recognized and honored by Sierra Leone.

“Honestly, Conteh should be honored, he deserves a state funeral because of what he did for Sierra Leone,” an emotional Kallon said.

“He was a brother, a very close friend and a fantastic teammate. It’s a very sad moment for me.

“It was the worst time of my life. I didn’t expect to lose Conteh just yet, but it’s the work of God and may his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Gianni Infantino, president of world governing body Fifa, expressed his “sincere and heartfelt” condolences in a letter to Sierra Leone Football Association president Thomas Daddy Brina.

“Words seem insufficient to express the sadness we feel for this loss,” Infantino wrote.

“His personality, his loyalty and his human qualities will not be forgotten, and he will be truly missed.”

A leader on and off the pitch

Conteh made his senior international debut in a 1-0 loss to Senegal in an international friendly in Dakar in December 1989 and won 38 caps, scoring four goals.

His international career included a two-year hiatus from 2000, following a financial disagreement with the country’s football association, but on his return to the team Kallon returned the captain’s armband out of respect.

Highlights for Conteh came when he helped the Leone Stars qualify for the Nations Cup for the first time in 1994 – and return to the final two years later.

He also helped Leone Stars win the now defunct Amilcar Cabral Zone II West Africa tournament on home soil in 1993, his country’s first-ever silverware.

Conteh was also respected off the pitch due to his humility and kindness.

“Junior is the nicest person I’ve ever seen, he wanted everyone around him to be happy,” Kallon explained.

“We used to call him ‘United Nations’ during his heyday because he treated everyone the same. We learned a lot from him. He was so generous, he wanted to help everyone. world around him, he was so kind.”

Conteh was at the Nations Cup earlier this year in Cameroon as part of the Sierra Leone coaching staff, and at the time of his death was the coach of second division side Freetown FC.

Kei Kamara, another former Leone Stars striker, also paid tribute to Conteh, who he called a “legend”.

“It’s shocking news but I believe he has lived his dream and we have to celebrate him for that,” Kamara, 37, told BBC Sport Africa.

“I’m just very happy to have been able to be by his side at the CAN [this year] and share a few words about the beautiful game. My prayers to his family, and I’m sure they will understand that the rest of Sierra Leone are in tears but will celebrate him for the legend he was.”

Although Kallon played for French top club Monaco as well as three-time European champions Inter, Conteh did not reach such heights.

His club career began at home with the Old Edwardians, with whom he won the Sierra Leone league title in 1990.

The striker then joined Guinean club Horoya AC before moving to Belgian club Beerschot VAC in 1992, where he scored 13 goals in 48 appearances over three seasons.

Conteh went on to play for SV Meppen in Germany, Boavista and Varzim in Portugal, Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates and clubs in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand before ending his career in his native East End Lions.

Beerschot paid tribute to the player, calling him “a technically strong and quick striker”.

“Junior has carved his way into the hearts of our supporters by dribbling everyone and leaving them on the ground in a home game against Anderlecht,” read a club statement.

“Beerschot expresses his deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.”
