Pen, paper and a pandemic helped turn a Salmon Arm woman’s dream of writing a book into reality.

As a poetry writer, Pam Saul had long thought about a book, but it was the impact and restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic that prompted her to take the plunge.

Never having learned to use a computer or type, Saul literally wrote his book with pen on paper.

Saul grew up in a small hillside village on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, with no electricity or tarmac roads. His family owned the only car, so they made many trips to bring people to a nearby town. She went to school by train.

Her father had an ocean-going boat and she spent a lot of time there when she was little. He was an electrical engineer and specialized in marine engineering, so she often accompanied him to the docks. His boat was his kind of “dream kid,” Saul explained.

From this dream came the name of Saul’s youth fiction adventure story, Dreamkeeper.

Pam taught high school in England before moving to British Columbia with her husband Mike.

They settled in Prince George and then Penticton where she continued her career as an art educator, while teaching many other subjects as teachers are often asked to do.

She and Mike retired to Salmon Arm about 30 years ago.

Pam said she chose a youth fiction story because that was the middle and high school age group she was teaching.

“I got very emotionally attached to my work and to the students, so that was my comfort zone, I guess, writing for that kind of age bracket.”

However, she said Mike pointed out to guests at a recent book signing at Bookingham Palace in Salmon Arm that it was also good reading for parents and grandparents because of its happy ending.

As one online reader commented, “Pam Saul! What a beautiful soul! I am certain that any reader, young or old, will benefit immensely from the wealth of insight, kindness and genuine understanding of this lady.

Pam said she writes by first drawing on her experiences and then using her imagination.

Her daughter, Rebecca, who runs a global company that addresses women’s and girls’ issues, travels extensively. In order for Pam and Mike to see their grandchildren, who are now 18 and 20, they traveled to remote places such as villages in Tibet or rivers in Nepal.

The characters are pretty closely based on their grandchildren, especially their grandson, she said. The illustration of a boy on the book cover is from an actual photo of his son, Arran, when he was younger.

The story centers on an orphan named Kestrel and his life with the rest of the crew on a ferry serving two small villages on the Gecko River.

“Unexpected dangers, well-kept secrets and incredible revelations from the past could easily tear the Dreamkeeper and his crew apart before they reach the end of their amazing journey to the sparkling sea,” Pam writes, describing the plot.

As the Dreamkeeper characters face obstacles, Pam has done the same by publishing her book. She decided to self-publish, which turned out to be easier said than done.

“It was like walking on hot coals last year, in that I’m not technologically astute,” she said with a smile. “I’m just a naive person, I think.”

Her wish to illustrate and lay out the book herself also complicated matters. She notes that the cover illustration is a little fainter than she intended.

In the end, however, with the help of her family, she was completely successful. During her first book signing, which she called a “baptism of fire,” she sold more books than expected.

If you want to buy Dreamkeeper, it’s available at Bookingham Palace in Piccadilly Shopping Centre, online at Friesenpress.com/store/Dreamkeeper and on ‘E’ book at Nookstore, Apple Books, Google play and Kobu store.

Portland writer Zoe Ballering, author of new collection of short stories It’s just us (University of North Texas Press, 192 pages, $14.95), attended her first writing group in high school, where she fell in love with storytelling and discovered the power of the workshop.

After majoring in English, she pursued a master’s degree in creative writing from Western Washington University, where she encountered what already looked like a lifelong writing group. Although she has heard horror stories about MFA programs, her experience could not have been more positive.

“I always heard people say, ‘You’re going to become an automaton, you’re going to have to write a certain way in your program.’ But I didn’t find that at all,” says Ballering WW. “I met other writers who I’m still friends with, who I still share my work with.”

Ballering is far from being an automaton. Her work is imaginative and speculative, playing with themes like loneliness, pain, and what it means to be human. The characters are sometimes otherworldly but believable and adorably real.

Ballering first started publishing short stories in literary media like Arts and crafts and Electrical literature— and once her story “Double or Nothing” won the 2021 Rougarou Fabulism & Speculative Fiction competition, she was on a roll. She then submitted a manuscript of It’s just us for the 2022 University of North Texas Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Short Fiction and won.

It’s just us examines the connections between family, young love and, as Ballering notes, mothers. She wrote the two main mother-themed stories in the collection, “Mothers” and “Ark”, around the same time.

The latter is a modern look at Noah’s Ark and features Karis, a young woman who is in charge of the ark’s bird pairs and mistakenly breaks the two-by-two rule when she gathers two roosters together. instead of a rooster and a hen. This rookie mistake forces the ark to turn around before the flood destroys life on earth, so the Chosen go back to the same place where Karis got the roosters in the first place: her mother’s house.

The inspiration behind the story? “When I was a kid, I was just obsessed with sexing chickens and the fact that it’s actually a job,” Ballering says. “You can make a lot of money! But I was fascinated by this process. And so I thought, what is – at least in the Western canon – the first example of where this would matter? »

Animal sex aside, the story is really about a young woman who doesn’t take her mother’s mortality as seriously as she should. It’s a look at a common experience: that feeling that loved ones, especially mothers, will always be there, and the all too belated realization that you’ve taken your time with them for granted.

As for the biblical implications of “Ark,” Ballering takes a nuanced perspective. “I don’t have a religious background,” she says, “but I’m very fascinated by the question: is there anyone up there? If so, why do they never respond? And why is the world the way it is?

It is the theme of “Here I Am”, which inspired the cover of the collection: a naked mole rat, another animal that fascinates Ballering. “They don’t feel pain, and I think that’s a really fun fact,” she says. “Although I’m not quite sure how you determine that.”

Ballering’s mother works with people with chronic pain, which led her to wonder: what if people could somehow not feel pain? “I think the question [of that story] i.e. what price would people pay for not feeling pain? ” she says.

Given that Ballering spent most of his life in the Pacific Northwest, it’s no surprise that many of his stories touch upon places in Portland and surrounding towns or mention them outright.

She says she can imagine exactly where certain scenes would take place.

Take “Substances: A School Year,” about a group of high school students obsessively revolted by a variety of substances, from “soup-like substances” on the floor to what they perceive as feces or vomiting. The story ends with a scene in which a character is walking, all eyes on her. “In my head, she’s on 26 and Powell,” Ballering says.

Of course, emotional geography is just as important as physical geography in It’s just us. Ballering sums up his collection well: “I think these are stories about navigating relationships and also navigating lack of closure when our worlds are changed.”

The Wayne Family Adventures The webcomic series available on WEBTOON has found immense popularity among DC Comics and Bat-Family fans. The webcomic has gained popularity due to its inclusion of many of Batman’s fan-favorite allies, spending time highlighting each of the characters they feature in comedic and serious ways.

The assured continuation of the series means the writers are free to expand cast and story possibilities with its second season and potentially beyond. With the Wayne Family Adventures A webcomic focusing on the various characters who fight side-by-side with Batman, there are plenty of fan-favorite heroes and vigilantes who should get their much-needed shot in the spotlight.

ghost maker

An image of DC Comics' Ghost-Maker posing

Though still an incredibly new addition to the Bat-family, debuting during DC Comics’ “Infinite Frontier” era, Minhkhoa Khan, also known as the vigilante Ghost-Maker, has already established himself in the Batman myth. He has a strong rivalry with Batman which began when the two were traveling the world as teenagers. This rivalry has created a strong identity for the character within the Bat-family, as he is both the person Batman respects and hates the most within the vigilante community.

There are plenty of story opportunities with Ghost-Maker that can match the lighthearted but sometimes serious tone of the Wayne Family Adventures series. Ghost-Maker’s bombastic attitude could make for a fun story of Batman and Ghost-Maker trying to outdo each other while patrolling Gotham City. On the other hand, their differing moral beliefs about killing criminals could pave the way for a more serious story giving insight into their strained relationship, while also explaining why the two characters concluded their method was better than the other. . While it doesn’t have the biggest comic book story yet, there are plenty of ways Wayne Family Adventures could integrate the Ghost-Maker into their DC/WEBTOON universe.

Clayface (Basil Karlo)

clay face

Clayface’s transformation into an ally of the Bat-Family is one of the few examples of Batman villains fully committing to heroism, with many of his contemporaries such as Man-Bat and Two-Face always returning to villainy. Clayface’s heroic transformation in James Tynion IV Detective comics racing and Ram V catwoman run illustrated both the struggles Clayface faces in trying to do good, while also showing the many efforts he has made to redeem himself. He even attempted to plead for other members of Batman’s rogues gallery to follow his lead and turn over a new leaf, persuading Killer Croc and Firefly to help defend Gotham in the Batman: State of Fear crossover event.

A story about a reformed villain struggling to do good while haunted by his many sins as a criminal would be a great story for the writers of Wayne Family Adventures say. Clayface within mainstream DC Comics has even developed an adorable friendship with Cassandra Cain, a character previously featured in the webcomic series who could have some really fun interactions with the reformed shape-shifting criminal. With characters from Wayne Family Adventures prone to pranking himself, Clayface’s shapeshifting could be a real force to be reckoned with in any mischievous escapades.

Onyx

Could Onyx's return to the Gotham Herald be the reappearance of a forgotten Batman ally?

While not a typical mask-and-cape crime-fighting vigilante like most other members of the Bat-Family, the former League of Assassins; Onyx has a unique and epic charm that could make her a terrific addition to the Wayne Family Adventures cast of characters. Unlike most other members of the Bat-Family, Onyx adopted a highly unorthodox approach to dealing with crime in Gotham City that would set her apart among her contemporaries. Onyx took control of various criminal gangs in Gotham, such as the Hill Street Gang, and used them for more benign ends, such as stopping other criminal gangs from doing more heinous acts.

Whether Wayne Family Adventures took the opportunity to add Onyx to the cast of vigilantes, they could also use her appearance to showcase her partnership with purple-clad Orpheus, another vigilante who prefers the use of subterfuge and fighting the crime of the interior. The two could be an awesome duo in the online comic series and could get into a lot of antics trying to deal with the Hill Street Gang while also making time to fight crime in Gotham City.

Jace Fox

Tim ‘Jace’ Fox managed to become the ‘Batman of New York’ in his solo series I am batman (by John Ridley, Oliver Coipel, Travel Foremen and Stephen Segovia) he has since become an incredibly important member of the Batman Mythos, though he doesn’t operate out of Gotham City like most other members of the Bat- Family. While facing adversity trying to prove himself worthy of the Batman moniker, Jace has proven himself to be a cunning and effective crime fighter. His accolades have earned him the respect of Robin and The Question.

Jace has proven himself not only to be a decent martial artist, but also a tech savvy, battling the pirate supervillain “Anti-Oracle” Seer using the computer skills he learned from his father Lucius Fox. This could be an interesting way to Wayne Family Adventures to portray the differences between Jace’s Batman and Bruce Wayne, having different methods of fighting crime. Maybe Wayne Family Adventures could also delve into Jace’s relationship with his brother Luke Fox (the Batwing hero), which has often been described as strained. Regardless of how they use Jace inside Wayne Family Adventuresthe prospect of there being two Batmen would be quite a spectacle.

Azrael (Jean-Paul Valley)

Justice League Odyssey #5 Rapture Azrael

Azrael had a particularly difficult relationship with the Bat-Family thanks to the psychological programming he underwent through the secret Order of St Dumas, which could turn the shy Jean-Paul Vallée into a fanatical murderer. Azrael’s violent actions in replacing Bruce Wayne as Batman in the fall of the knight and knightquest The storyline that took place from 1993 to 1994 firmly placed Azrael as an outsider among the Bat-Family. He became someone Batman and his team were hesitant to trust and only rarely called for help.

That said, Azrael has taken giant steps to regain good faith within the Bat-Family, joining Tim Drake’s Gotham Knights team in James Tynion IV. Detective comics and aiding Batman in a plot related to the undead team of villains; Z working group. Azrael has a wealth of story opportunities in the continuity of Wayne Family Adventures, where his outcast status could be addressed, or his strained relationship with certain members could be explored. If the webcomic series wanted to take Azrael in a more comedic direction, his humorous relationship with Batwing is fertile ground. The two constantly criticize the other’s reliance on technology or religious faith, and a short Wayne Family Adventures story could work well to validate the points of view of the two characters.

Adventures of the Wayne Family’ continued success has ensured it will last well beyond its second season, with more stories and spinoffs featuring the likes of the Vixen: NYC and Red Riding Hood: Outlaw, there’s bound to be a plethora of new characters joining the cast of heroes. While not every character on this list may get a chance to appear in the WEBTOON digital comic series, it’s a safe bet that at least a few of them will get a well-deserved cameo. , much to the delight of Bat-Family fans everywhere.

As Kenyon continues to recover from the pandemic, many students are taking advantage of the vast natural beauty Gambier and surrounding areas have to offer. Places like the Brown Family Environmental Center (BFEC) and Kenyon Farm provide opportunities for students to enjoy the natural world, but in recent years the Kenyon College Outdoors Club (KCOC) has been increasingly tasked with bringing students outside. Kenyan students.

KCOC, which has been active since the 1990s, organizes a variety of weekend trips ranging from camping to hiking to fishing, as well as longer trips during October and spring break. The club also sponsors an annual pre-orientation trip to West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest, which it has hosted since 2009. Club president Wyatt Henneman ’23 wrote in an email to college student that “The Outdoors Club’s mission has always been to facilitate experiential learning, create opportunities for students to connect with one another, and encourage engagement with the natural world in an organized setting, affordable and safe.

According to Henneman, he became involved with the Outdoors Club “from the start” during his first year at Kenyon when he went on the pre-orientation backpacking trip. He credits the trip with helping students find a place on campus, a sentiment that was echoed by other participants in a recent college student experience profile. A strong believer in the unifying power of the outdoors, Henneman noted the bonding opportunities presented by club-sponsored activities. “You can get out of your routine, go somewhere you’ve never been before, and experience something completely new.”

It’s a sentiment shared by Hannah Ehrlich ’26, who recently went “Bigfoot hunting” in Salt Fork State Park with KCOC. “It was nice to meet new people, especially some upperclassmen, and it was great to be able to take a break from studying and get off campus,” she said. Ehrlich also expressed his joy at the unexpected moments that can come up while traveling, quoting one from the outing: “We drove to a hiking trail that led to a historic house, and two volunteers gave us an unsolicited tour. ”

The club offers many offbeat activities that break away from standard hiking and camping, including canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, rock climbing, biking, sledding and downhill skiing. Discussing a rainbow trout fishing trip in Ohio’s Vermilion River, Henneman referenced his past experiences with nature and the outdoors that shaped his current philosophy: “My dad taught me how to fish when I was young, and I want to use that knowledge to create a safe and accessible learning opportunity for as many students as possible.

Henneman said in the aftermath of the pandemic, there has been an increase in interest in experiencing the outdoors, which has led to more students getting involved with the club in recent semesters. This posed some challenges, as Ohio’s unpredictable weather can make it difficult to plan outings for large groups in advance. Another, more unprecedented challenge, according to Henneman, is a troubling trend of students canceling trips on short notice, not giving the club time to fill their spot with someone on the waiting list.

Despite this, Henneman was very optimistic about the club’s future. “The number of students interested in traveling shows the school’s interest in the Outdoors Club. We are always looking for thoughtful, organized and passionate students who want to get more involved and bring new ideas,” he said.

A glimpse of life in 1916 for James P McIntosh has been put to the book.

A writer from Aviemore helped provide insight into life in the Far East for a sapper in World War I.

Wendy Grigor collected the book from memoirs kept by her grandfather James P McIntosh.

He was born in Aberdeen’s Innes Street on August 17, 1887 and enlisted in 1916 shortly after the arrival of his first child.

After his weeks of training, he sailed to fight on the front lines with the Royal Engineers in Mesopotamia – an ancient region now home to parts of modern day Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey and Syria – the October 8 of the same year.

Ms Grigor said she was inspired to compile her grandfather’s notes to keep alive a regular soldier’s account of life and travels during the Great War.

She said: “His memoirs and notes give brief accounts of some of the characters he encountered during this time and descriptions of the places he visited along the way.

“His travel and active duty experiences all come from a diary he kept at that time which gives insight into what life would have been like at the time.

“During his service, he went on leave – this is leave soldiers were entitled to if they had completed more than 18 months of overseas service.

“He took the opportunity to visit a close friend at Cawnpore in India and took notes of that visit. He also got a weekend off when he visited the ruins of Babylon.

“Babylon today has changed dramatically with Saddam Hussein’s construction in this area.”

Topics covered by the sapper include temperance and rum of which he writes: “Although I am practically a tea-total, I have never refused my ration of rum…

“I remember when we were lying in Hit we had no tents and very little bed clothes and as it was raining very heavily for hours I was very cold and we had every chance of to contract a disease.

“I was given a dose of rum and I took my own and fell asleep and although everything was wet and I lay in the mud I slept quite well until morning and that was no worse.

The Code of Khummurabi, The Tower of Babel, and The Unexpected all come for his observations.

Ms Grigor said: “The final chapter of my book gives a brief description of my grandfather’s eldest son, Stanley, who was awarded the MBE for distinguished service in the fire and rescue services.

“Unfortunately, he later lost his life in the line of duty.”

Sapper McIntosh survived the Great War

Ms. Grigor will be at Caberfeidh Horizons in Kingussie on Saturday November 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for an informal meeting, welcome and discussion on the “Chronicles of the East during the Great War”.

The book is available for sale at the Caberfeidh Horizons Kingussie Bookstore; The Bookmark in Grantown, Logie Steading Bookshop and Picaresque Books & Galerie in Dingwall and can also be ordered online from Ms Grigor at wendygrigor867@gmail.com

There’s nothing better than being on the Smith River during the fall season to see the sunset, hang out with friends, and learn the basics of fly fishing.

This time of year can be a little chilly, but being in the cold air and water is well worth the experience. The fall foliage provides beautiful scenery for a relaxing evening of fishing. It was not only my first fly fishing, but also my first official fishing in general.

We started on the grass and I learned to throw. After listening to instructions and watching a demonstration, I quickly made all the mistakes I could have made like I hadn’t been taught a single thing, but eventually I did well enough that we descended to River.

All dressed in waders and boots, I was ready to brave the cold water temperatures and confident that I wouldn’t get wet just standing in the river to fish.

People also read…

The first one thrown in the water when I was just beginning to orient myself a fish immediately bit the nymph (the little insect-like attachment on the hook) and because I was unprepared the fish fled and took the nymph with him.

My ever patient teacher, Brian Williams, then tied up another nymph for me to start over.

This time I was able to practice a few throws before disaster struck again. I practiced the techniques I had learned on land and cast further and further into the river, letting the line out a little more each time. Then, on one of my casts, as I was pulling the line out of the water, I got stuck in the tree behind me.

The nymph broke away from the branch and was too tall to be retrieved. Once again another nymph was tied on the line and at this point I felt like a complete failure. I was assured that I would not believe the number of nymphs stuck in the trees at Smith’s River.

After a few more casts I finally managed to catch a fish on the line, but as I was rewinding it and it was right in front of me I lifted it out of the water and the fish was able to flop its away from the hook and back into the water.

It was the closest I’ve come to catching a fish on this particular occasion, but next time I’m determined to catch one and get the first traditional fish catching photo my friend Anna Wheeler has been able to take . Anna is a more experienced fly fisherman than me, but still a little new to the sport and she was able to catch a few fish.

One challenge I didn’t expect was being able to see the indicator (or bobber) that sits on the water and indicates when a fish has bitten the nymph. My eyes, which were already using glasses to see better, were getting worse and worse as they grew darker as time went on.

Overall it was a spectacular experience and this traditionally male dominated sport has a new member because I am determined to catch this fish next time. The challenge of placing the nymph in the right place was enough to get me interested in learning all the different techniques that can be used.

Having made just about every mistake in the book, I’m willing to come back to them next time and avoid repeating them. In my opinion, and based on my recent experience, anyone who is hesitant to try fly fishing for whatever reason should take every chance they have to give it a try.

And even if you end up not totally enjoying the fishing aspect, you can sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery that is nature around a river and maybe also take some cool action shots, just do be careful to take a stable footing in the river so as not to end up swimming spontaneously.

ELLICOTT, CO — In our exclusive Adventures with Alan series, we’ll travel through southern Colorado week after week to show you thrills, hidden gems, and well-known spots.

Located about 40 minutes east of Colorado Springs in Ellicott is Wishing Star Farm.

With the farm’s “fall party” underway, we meet up with owner Jason Wood to see what they have to offer.

“We have our annual pumpkin patch. We have lots of activities for the kids. Everything from the paddle maze, the hay pyramid, the hay slide, and the petting zoo with the animals,” Wood said.

The 35-acre farm is decked out from top to bottom with Halloween decorations and lots of cool things to see and do.

On the day of our visit, Wood is busy entertaining local Hope Montessori students.

I join them for a descent on the slide, the jumping cushion and some lawn games.

After playing around for a bit, we decide it’s time to take a look at the pumpkins.

A big highlight of our visit to Wishing Star Farm is finding the perfect pumpkin in their pumpkin patch, and guests can grab one for a cost of $5.

To visit schools, Wood tells me that each student can choose their favorite pumpkin to take home. Although he doesn’t grow them locally, he says they are sourced locally from farms in neighboring Fremont and Pueblo counties.

But what the farm lacks in fresh produce, they make up for it by having fun.

In fact, a big draw on the farm is the petting zoo, which features some of the 65 farm animals.

There are the mini ponies, Matilda and Mollie, and Boo the camel. Pony rides are also offered Friday through Sunday for an additional $5.

Wood tells me that he and his family took over the farm from the previous owners last year.

“We love people coming out, taking pictures and just loving the kids running around the pumpkin patch and getting everything from the little pumpkin they can take home to the bigger pumpkins they can carve or put on. on the doorstep.” Bois said.

All in all, if you’re looking for a great, fun family activity this fall, Wishing Star Farm is a place that has something for everyone.
