Colorado wraps up Homestand with a pair of non-conference games
BLOCK — The Colorado lacrosse team wraps up a three-game homestand this week with a pair of contests against non-conference opponents.
The Buffaloes will face their first ranked opponent of the season in No. 16 Vanderbilt on Friday, March 4 at 2 p.m. This is only the second time the two programs will meet and the first time the Commodores will play in Boulder.
Then, on Sunday, March 6, CU hosts former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival UC Davis. This contest is scheduled for a draw at 1 p.m. and will be the sixth time the two programs have played; the third in Boulder. Both games are scheduled to be played at Kittredge Field.
Both games will be streamed in Pac-12+. Thad Anderson will provide play-by-play and color for Friday’s game, while Brad Thompson will assume those same duties for Sunday’s contest. The link to the streams, along with the live stats, is available at CUBuffs.com.
ABOUT COLORADO: The Buffaloes are 3-0 heading into this week of play, which includes a pair of wins at home (Louisville, 14-13-OT; Ohio State, 13-10) and one on the road (Harvard, 12- 6) .
CU leads the Pac-12 and ranks 24th in the NCAA in free position percentage (.538). Sadie Grozier is third in the NCAA in free position goals per game (2.33) and charlie rudy is sixth (2.00). Grozier is 40 years oldand in the nation in free standing percentage (.700) and Rudy is 42n/a (0.667). The duo are first and second respectively in the two categories of the Pac-12. Grozier also leads the conference in goals per game, averaging 5.00 per game.
The defense of the Buffs and Grace Donnelly are both 27th nationally in save percentage (.491). Donnelly leads the Pac-12 in save percentage and saves per game (9.33) and is third in total saves (28). His 9.51 goals-against average is second in the conference and 23rd in the NCAA.
ABOUT VANDERBILT: The Commodores are 3-0 to start the season. They earned a No. 16 ranking in the Inside Lacrosse/IWLCA and USA Lacrosse Magazine polls after recording wins over then-No. Liberty (18-13). 12 Notre-Dame (14-12) and Élon (17-11).
Gabby Fornia is the team leader in points with 13. She has four goals and nine points and added three balls on the ground. Bri Gross has a team record of seven goals and 17 draw checks. Paige Gunning spent 180:00 in front of goal. She allowed 36 goals and made 30 saves for a .455 save percentage.
THE SERIES: Vanderbilt leads the series 1-0. This is the second meeting between the two teams. The first meeting took place on February 21, 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee. Vanderbilt won 11-10 in overtime.
ABOUT UC DAVIS: The Aggies are 2-0 but will face Denver on March 4 before playing CU on March 6. They beat San Diego State (16-13) and California (16-5) this season.
Alex Agnew leads UCD in goals, assists and points with seven goals, six assists and 13 points. Grace Gebhardt is second on the team with nine points (four goals, five assists) and has a team-high 14 draw checks. Ashley Laing played in both games in goal, allowing 18 goals while making 23 saves.
THE SERIES: The Buffs have never lost to the Aggies, holding a 5-0 advantage. They are 2-0 against UCD in Boulder, meeting both times while the programs were members of the MPSF. CU and USD met on April 9, 2021 in Davis, California. The Buffs won the closely contested game 16-13.
HOME GAME INFORMATION: Colorado’s home games will be played at Kittredge Field; admission and parking are free in lot 416. Additional parking is available in lot RG on the north side of the CU Events Center.
FOLLOWING: Pac-12 conference play begins on the road for CU. The Buffs travel to Los Angeles to take on Southern California on March 11, and then on March 13 the Buffs will be in Tempe, Arizona for a game against Arizona State.
