India accounted for 20% of all mobile app downloads globally in 2021, taking the top spot
The current Covid-19 pandemic has boosted digital economies and the consumption of everything digital. Most people have succumbed to mobile gaming while others have used their smartphones to learn new skills or to hone a hobby.
According to app trends shared by App Annie, the world has collectively spent $ 135 billion on mobile apps. India dominated the global app industry with most downloads on Android and iOS.
A 25% increase in app downloads
Globally, a 25% increase has been noted by App Annie for the year 2021, with the market expected to reach $ 135 billion by the end of the year. Last year, the estimated app download spend was $ 112 billion.
There are big differences for iOS and Android – 65 cents for each app came from Apple’s iOS ecosystem. Gamers accounted for the most spending – accounting for 60% of all iOS revenue and a whopping 80% of all money spent on the Google Play Store.

Outside of games, more than a third of all app revenue now comes from entertainment and social apps. App Annie predicts that entertainment apps will bring in $ 12 billion in 2022.
In terms of app downloads, around 140 billion new app downloads were recorded in 2021 – 10 billion more than in 2020 and 20 billion more than in 2019. Most of these downloads took place on Google Play Store. About 100 billion of the 140 billion new app downloads have taken place within the Google ecosystem.
The obsession with apps in India persists
India tops the download rankings! 20% of all app downloads on iOS and Google Play Store were from India. The United States accounted for 9 percent of all downloads, followed by Brazil with 8 percent.

Three India-specific apps were among the top 10 “breaking download lists”. These were MX TakaTak, Meesho and Share Karo India.
