Luka Doncic steps up in The Athletic Player Tiers update

The Dallas Mavericks have reached another level as superstar Luka Doncic has found his groove. The 23-year-old has struggled out of the gate, but he’s averaging 29.1 points, 10.1 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game since the schedule moved to 2022.

Doncic resolves all defenses. Teams are throwing everything to stop him, and the 23-year-old continues to post monster numbers. The Mavs traded Kristaps Porzingis at the deadline, but that didn’t slow them down. They have won five of seven since the move, with Luka scoring over 30 goals on four occasions.

Athleticism updated their player levels (subscription required) on March 1. Before the season, Luka missed out on the top tier but was still one of the top ten players on their roster. Where did it land in the latest update?

Tier 1 included eight players in The Athletic’s roster. The first three were considered to belong to level 1A and the next five to level 1B. Luka Doncic went from Tier 2A to Tier 1B in the update. The Mavericks superstar ranked outside the top three, but among the league’s top eight players. Stephen Curry was the only other playmaker in his tier and Luka was the only player under 25 in Tier 1.

Luka is on track to make the All-NBA First Team for the third year in a row. Voters may favor Ja Morant given the Grizzlies’ success, but Doncic has produced better numbers and is proving to be the top talent. If you’re starting a franchise, there should be no question about which player to take on first.

Can Luka upgrade to Rank 1A? What must he accomplish to make that leap? Doncic must prove his defensive gains are real and lead the Dallas Mavericks on a long playoff streak. Luka will be the best player in the league during his prime, and fans won’t want to miss a second of it, so stay tuned.
