More reliable calls and faster mobile downloads on Aotearoa New Zealand’s best mobile network

Following significant investment in Vodafone NZ’s mobile network, as part of an ongoing nationwide program of upgrades and widespread 5G rollout, independent testing shows that Vodafone offers its customers the best mobile network across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Vodafone’s network in March 2022 achieved the highest overall advantage for data and voice call quality in an independent certification report by global mobile benchmarking leader umlaut, now part of Accenture. Vodafone’s mobile network outperformed both Spark and 2degrees.

Thaigan Govender, Head of Mobile Access Networks, Vodafone NZ, said: “We want to give Vodafone customers the best possible mobile experience. That’s why we were the first operator to build a 5G mobile network in December 2019, and we now offer 5G in nearly 50 cities on the motu.

“This independent certification has allowed mobile network testers to travel 6,700 km around New Zealand to test our performance, and shows that Vodafone offers mobile customers the best network in terms of overall performance, data and voice calls. It is further complemented by six months of crowd-sourced data from smartphones to capture a 24/7 view of customer experience in over 97.6% of New Zealand’s populated areas.

“Vodafone’s network performed considerably better in major cities than any other operator, recording much higher mobile download speeds – with at least 385 Mbps for the top 10% of users.

“As many people shift to online communications, voice calls are still hugely important, especially for business customers – and our mobile voice performance was significantly better than any other carrier.”

The umlaut certification report, which was conducted using a Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G device, shows:

  • Vodafone has the best mobile network in New Zealand, scoring 797 points out of 1000 in total, compared to 2degrees reaching 760 points and Spark 751.
  • The Vodafone network scores best in terms of data performance in major cities, towns and roads, so Vodafone customers enjoy the fastest mobile downloads.
  • In major cities, Vodafone customers get the best YouTube browsing and streaming experience. Tests have shown that in major cities, 10% of users experience speeds above 385 Mbps compared to 185 Mbps for Spark and 99 Mbps for 2 degrees.
  • Vodafone gives customers the best voice experience, with a voice quality score of 240 out of 300 (80%), compared to Spark and 2degrees, both scoring 201. Vodafone is a strong leader in voice call clarity as well as call setup time.

“In early 2021, we plan to invest heavily in our mobile network to improve coverage and capacity for Vodafone customers, which means better mobile browsing quality and fewer dropped calls,” says Thaigan. .

“We have completed upgrades in Manawatū and Bay of Plenty, where we also received top marks for network performance in independent testing. We are currently upgrading our digital infrastructure in parts of Waikato, Taranaki and Southland, and will eventually make our way across the country as we understand how important remarkable connectivity is to our customers.

The driving test route has been independently selected by umlaut under strict selection criteria to ensure that at least 60% of the population is represented. All mobile operators were told about the certification window, but none were aware of the route testers would take in New Zealand.

The umlaut benchmarking methodology is the de facto industry standard today. It is applied in more than 120 countries measuring more than 200 mobile networks worldwide.
