Rioux crowned Big 12 player of the week
IRVING, Texas — After earning thrilling victories over quality competition over the weekend, OSU senior Lise Marie Rioux was named Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week.
Rioux helped the Cowgirls record a declaration victory over No. 10 USC on Feb. 19 and followed that up with a sweep of Tulsa the next day. Rioux went 3-0 in the two matches, including a win over the nation’s top-ranked singles player and the nation’s fifth-ranked doubles duo.
The native of Okinawa, Japan, and her doubles partner, Ayumi Miyamoto, started the weekend with a 6-2 win over fifth-seeded Trojan pair Snow Han and Salma Ewing to give the Cowgirls the first half of the doubles point. The duo dropped out of the opener but battled to tie the game at two before picking up four straight points for the win.
Rioux then avenged Miyamoto’s singles loss, which halved OSU’s lead to 2-1, by knocking out No. 1-ranked Eryn Cayetano on the first court. The senior has won seven games in a row en route to a surprise 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Rioux carried the winning energy from Saturday to Sunday as she and Miyamoto cruised to a 6-3 win over Tulsa’s Laia Conde Monfort and Shura Poppe. Rioux then led 94th-ranked Condé Monfort 6-3, 4-3 when the match was called off.
