Tides loses to Charlotte after winning first two games of series – The Virginian-Pilot

The Norfolk Tides’ two-game winning streak in Charlotte ended as the Knights won 9-6 Thursday night at Truist Field.

The fourth contest in the six-game series is scheduled for 7:04 p.m. Friday.

Jacob Nottingham sparked the tides (17-22) by walking twice, scoring two runs and driving in two. He and Greg Cullen homered in the second and third innings, respectively, to make it 2-2.

Charlotte (16-23) then took command with a five-point third over Denyi Reyes, who had recently been called up to the majors by Baltimore.

Former Virginia Cavaliers and Philadelphia Phillies starter Adam Haseley and Yolbert Sanchez had hits before Danny Mendick scored when second baseman Cullen made an infield error. Mark Payton, who had hit a two-run homer in the second, then chained a two-run double to right field for a 7-2 advantage.

The Tides went 7-6 in the sixth. Nottingham and Cadyn Grenier drew base-loaded walks, and Adley Rutschman hit a field single that led to two runs, thanks to a throwing error from Mendick at shortstop.

Sanchez provided more of a cushion for the Knights in the eighth, hitting a two-run homer down the center.
