VPN app downloads on Google Play Store, Apple App Store climbs in Russia

Russia restricts internet access
According to a report by 9to5Mac, the Russian government has since restricted internet access.
In fact, according to a recent report by The Guardian, the Russian government has already confirmed that it has completely blocked access to Facebook.
On the other hand, the Russian country’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, has also confirmed that it has restricted access to another social media giant, Twitter.
There are also reports that the Russian communications regulator has also blocked access to Western news outlets, such as the BBC.

That said, those in Russia no longer have access to Facebook, while some of them might not be able to fully access Twitter as well.
Thus, VPN applications have become the most downloaded applications on the Apple App Store on Russian territory.
9to5Mac noted in the same report that VPN apps help their users unblock or bypass any restriction on various websites on the internet.
At the same time, VPN apps also allow those who use it to surf the Internet anonymously to avoid disclosing personal information online.
Therefore, it would not be surprising if internet users in the Russian nation have resorted to VPN apps, which is evident in its recent massive increase in downloads.
VPN downloads are climbing
According to a report by an analyst firm called AppFigures, VPN app downloads in the Russian nation have seen massive growth since February 24.
As of last Tuesday or March 1, the most popular VPN apps from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in Russia had already seen a massive 1200% increase in downloads.
On top of that, VPN app downloads on March 1 in Russia have already reached half a million or 500,000. This is a massive growth from its daily average in the country, which is only than about 10,000 downloads per day in February.

Apple App Store blocked?
According to a Computing UK report, a security expert, Runa Sandvik, reported that the Russian government has already blocked access to Apple App Stores.
